Ready, Set - Be Dorky!
Jul 15, 2025
Today is National Pet Fire Safety Day, and I’ve made a dorky decision – that’s not today’s topic. Instead, I’ve decided to be a dork today in honor of Be a Dork Day.
C’mon, you know you want to be a dork too, right?
No? Where’s your sense of fun? Many people think that being a dork is a bad thing. That’s only because they’ve called someone they thought was socially awkward and interested in odd things a dork. Dork is a word that’s been around for nearly two centuries, and while it’s been used as a way to tease or denigrate others, it can also be a kinder, gentler term of endearment. The word “adorkable” is in fairly common use as a way to describe someone who might be shy and is also sweet and lovable.
Are you feeling any better about being a dork today?
How bout this…what if I told you that today is a celebration of your uniqueness? Like to wear loud socks? Paint your nails in glittery turquoise instead of ladylike pink? Have a collection of Star Trek action figures? What is your dorky pleasure? Each person has quirks and interests that make them unique, and maybe even a little bit dorky.
As I’m writing this, I’m typing with glittery purple nails. I put arugula in my vanilla smoothie. I’m looking at a few of my favorite rocks from my collection of dozens (really!) of pretty rocks. I’m wearing my favorite yoga t-shirt and yoga pants on a 90+ degree day. I’m living in the south and drinking unsweetened tea, for heaven’s sake…I have dork written all over me!
If you’re still not feeling like owning “dork” even just for one day, consider your pet or pets. Think of the times they made you laugh – it was because they did something dorky, right? Dogs are incredible dorks – they get themselves into impossible predicaments or do truly dumb things and we think they’re cute. That makes both your dog and you dorky!
So yes, it is a day to consider what you’d do if your home caught fire and your pets were at risk. Maybe pack a go-bag with important papers, lists of meds and vax dates, an extra collar and leash and whatever else you would need to grab quickly.
Then go back to letting your dork flag fly!
