One Moment Is Not the Whole Story
Sep 15, 2026
Dog show people are terrific observers. Unfortunately, sometimes we're too terrific.
We see a dog once—perhaps for 90 seconds in a show ring—and suddenly we know everything about that dog.
- "That dog can't move."
- "That dog has a terrible temperament."
- "That dog isn't trained."
- "I can't believe anyone admits to breeding that."
And occasionally, before the dog has even left the show grounds, our expert analysis has made its way onto social media.
But here's the problem: Context matters.
- Maybe the dog that wouldn't gait smoothly stepped on something sharp ten minutes earlier.
- Maybe the dog that backed away from the judge was startled by something outside the ring.
- Maybe the beautifully trained dog picked that particular day to forget everything it had learned since puppyhood.
- Maybe the dog you saw moving poorly at 9:17 Saturday morning moved beautifully at 2:30 Saturday afternoon.
Dogs aren't machines. Neither are handlers.
Every one of us has had a dog do something completely uncharacteristic and of course other people saw it. And every one of us has probably had a show-ring moment we'd rather not have preserved forever on somebody's phone.
A judge has to evaluate the dog presented on that day, in that ring, at that moment. That's our job.
But it's not the job of the rest of us to turn that moment into a lifetime verdict. And we certainly don't have to broadcast that verdict to thousands of people who weren't there to see the context for themselves.
Before you post, comment, whisper or share, ask yourself: Do I know the whole story—or did I simply see one moment of it?
There's an enormous difference. And you can do enormous harm by assuming the moment you saw is the whole story.
