If My Dog Were a Barista

September 29 is National Coffee Day, so naturally I started wondering about something of great importance:

What if our dogs were baristas? Forget the Pumpkin Spice Latte. If dogs ran the coffee shop, every breed would have its own signature drink.

Siberian Husky — The Iced Escape Artist
Triple espresso over ice, because hot coffee is ridiculous when you were designed for Siberia. Served with an extra shot because there's a six-foot fence out back that isn't going to climb itself.

Standard Poodle — The Café au Lait Élégant
Perfectly balanced espresso and steamed milk, beautifully presented. No whipped cream, please. It gets in the ear fringe and is simply impossible to get out.

Golden Retriever — The Everybody's My Best Friend Latte
Warm, sweet, comforting and topped with so much whipped cream that half of it ends up on somebody else. Comes with a complimentary hug.

Chihuahua — The Grande Attitude in a Demi Cup
One tiny espresso containing enough caffeine to power a Great Dane. Served at precisely 187 degrees because somebody needs to keep an eye on everything happening in this café.

Bulldog — The Slow-Brew Special
Rich, substantial and in absolutely no hurry whatsoever. Your order will be ready when it's ready and when the Bulldog is through shuffling around behind the counter. Sit down.

Border Collie — The Working Double Shot
Two shots of espresso, no foam, no nonsense. Your drink was finished before you ordered it, and the Border Collie reorganized the pastry case while waiting for you to pay.

Beagle — The Sniffaccino
Nobody knows what's in it because the Beagle abandoned the espresso machine after detecting a blueberry muffin three rooms away and brought back a secret ingredient that might or might not have still been moving.

Great Dane — The Venti Gentle Giant
The largest cup available, naturally. Surprisingly mild, wonderfully sweet—and somehow takes up the entire table.

Terrier — The Double-Shot Dig-It-Up
Bold. Intense. Slightly confrontational. Comes with an espresso shot, another espresso shot, and an unexplained hole in the café floor.

And, of course...

Your Dog — The House Specialty

If your dog were behind the counter, what breed-specific coffee drink would be on the menu?

Give it a name, tell us what's in it, and make us laugh. Extra points if only someone who knows your breed would understand the joke. Because apparently there are two things dog-show people can discuss indefinitely:

Dogs and coffee.

And frankly, I'm not sure we'd survive early-morning ring times without either one.

Before coffee, I can tell you my dog's name. After coffee, I can probably remember my armband number.
