Do You Paint the Sky?
Jul 08, 2025
I get it. It’s brain science. Old habits die hard, and they die harder the older a person gets. People who’ve grown up associating a certain day with a certain type of celebration and who’ve participated in that type of celebration every year have a very hard time understanding why some people want to change their celebration.
And people who have a problem with the celebration have a very hard time understanding why some people are so stuck in their ways and won’t change.
Suddenly, the conversations around the celebration become as noisy as the celebration itself, and no one feels heard or appreciated. They just feel frustrated and angry.
If you’ve seen a picture of me lately, you know I sport a head of grey hair and have more than a few wrinkles on my face. Yes, I’ve been around for a long time, and yes, I love a good fireworks display. Growing up, we kids played with sparklers while the grown-ups had firecrackers, bottle rockets, sky fliers, and jewel fountains. When the sky was dark, the world became a sparkling, colorful, magical delight in everyone’s eyes, kids and adults alike. Jimmy Buffet co-wrote and sang a song about “painting the sky” with celebratory fireworks. Creating and witnessing man-made fireflies is an intoxicating experience.
Old habits die hard, and while my spirit and mind aren’t old, I have been around for a long time. Each time we have a holiday with fireworks like the one we just had, I feel very conflicted. On one hand, they’re magical and whimsical and nostalgic. On the other, they frighten our pets and livestock, sometimes literally to death.
People didn’t know that way back when. People know that now.
Now, it’s possible to buy quiet fireworks. Now drone shows are replacing fireworks displays in some cities. Now some towns are outlawing the use of fireworks within a certain distance of horse and livestock stables and barns.
Will celebrations suddenly become quiet? No. Fireworks are part of our lives, something that a large segment of the population cherishes. Are celebrations slowly becoming more thoughtful of the safety of others?
Yes.
Old habits die hard, yet they do die. Eventually. If you have animals that are sensitive to noise, there’s hope on the horizon for you and for them.
