Are Dogs Really Necessary?

Today, let’s imagine a world without dogs. What would be different, and how would humans be different?

  1. Humans would be less physically fit. Dog owners enjoy more time outdoors, interacting with the environment, other people, and getting more exercise.
  2. Those with disabilities would find their lives much more limited without the assistance dogs they rely on.
  3. The incidence of heart disease and high blood pressure would go up, because the presence of dogs is related to healthier circulation, lower stress, and lower cortisol levels.
  4. People lost in disasters or in nature would be less likely to be found alive with no search and rescue dogs.
  5. Police officers would be more likely to be injured on the job without their canine partners.
  6. Cognitive decline with age would be more prevalent, as dog ownership is related to a lower incidence of cognitive loss.
  7. Without dogs, think of the cultural touchpoints we’d never have experienced. From the three-headed dog-god Cerberus and the many depictions of dogs in art to the real-life hero dogs like Balto and Togo in the Nome serum run that saved a town, dogs and humans share a path through this world that would be impossible to erase.

I grew up in a family of dog-lovers. I dreamed of the day when I could own a dog of my own, and since that day happened when I was 20, I haven’t been without at least one dog. My hobbies are dog-related, many of my longest-running friendships are dog-related, and my heart would probably break if I didn’t have a dog.

Do you love dogs? How would your world be different without them? C’mon…let’s hear it!
