Hurricane Season & Show Season: Preparing for the Storm

June marks the beginning of hurricane season—and whether you live where storms happen or not, it’s a good reminder of something dog show people understand well:

Preparation matters.

Anyone who has ever headed into a major cluster knows the feeling. You check your grooming supplies three times. You make sure the dogs are in top shape and their food and supplements are packed, with some extras just in case. Paperwork? Packed. Crates? Ready. Emergency kit? Hopefully nearby.

Because things happen.

A dog decides now is the perfect time for stomach upset. Your force dryer quits. A vehicle tire mysteriously loses its will to live halfway to the show site, out in the middle of nowhere.

Good handlers know success comes from planning before problems happen. Failure comes from failing to plan and prepare.

Think like a storm-prepper before your next big show week:

✔ Have extra medications and supplements packed
✔ Keep copies of vaccination records handy – ideally attached to each dog’s crate
✔ Bring backup grooming equipment when possible
✔ Know where emergency veterinarians are near the show grounds
✔ Pack extra food, water, cooling supplies, and first aid essentials

And perhaps most importantly…

Prepare mentally.

The people who weather both hurricanes and dog shows best are the ones who stay flexible when things don’t go to plan.

Because in both storms and shows, calm beats chaos every time.

Stay safe, stay prepared, and may all your June forecasts include blue skies and big wins.
