Giving Up the Need to Buffer - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites Podcast
A friend said to me recently that for all her adult life, she’s been the buffer between people she loves and the things or people that upset them.
That statement made Mom spring immediately to mind – she was often the buffer, too. She kept her children from being too rowdy when her husband had a migraine or was tired and cranky at the end of his workday. She kept her two sons from picking at each other. She kept her mom from making my brothers and me crazy when she visited, and she kept up correspondence when the military moved us all over the world, filtering the lives of five people into letters to her parents-in-law and her own family.
I thought of my own marriage, and how I was the buffer between friends who wanted to do couple-y things and my anti-social husband. How I was the buffer between the wasband and my family, and sometimes even his.
Think about your life…are you the buffer? How do you feel when you’re trying to keep the peace? And is it really your job? Do you want it to be?
If not, time to set a boundary. I know I will, going forward.
