Are You Having Nightly Wake-Up Calls from Your Brain? - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites Podcast

Do you wake up in the middle of the night, feeling like you’re in a panic?

For a long time I woke up at 3:15 as if I’d just had a bad dream. Adrenaline was pumping and it would be two hours before I could even think of sleeping again.

Sound familiar? Your sleep schedule could be the victim of your brain, just like mine was, and when your sleep is continually disrupted, so is your life and your health. The brain is diurnal, meaning it observes life in a twice-daily rhythm controlled by light. The brain’s internal clock signals parts of the body to do certain things at certain times of the day, things like digestion, hormone release, and deep sleep. When the diurnal rhythm is disrupted, so is your sleep.

Understanding that it’s just your brain’s discombobulation causing the problem is the first step, because you can calm yourself when you wake up in a panic the middle of the night. Light therapy, used regularly, can reset your brain’s clock so you can sleep. It’s safe for most people – talk to your doctor to be sure it is for you, then get set to sleep better!
