The Neuroscience Behind Idiotic Opinions - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites Podcast

Especially in a presidential election year, it’s very apparent that a lot of people hold hard-and-fast opinions about certain things.

Life informs our beliefs – once we’ve seen something or heard something often enough, we come to believe that it’s true, whether it’s factually true or not. That’s the way the brain is designed to work, and it’s how humans can learn as quickly as we do.

It’s also how people come to believe that those who think differently are dumb, or at the very least, misinformed. Algorithms online serve to reinforce our beliefs by giving us more of what we look at and interact with most often.

Next time someone says something you believe is factually incorrect, resist the temptation to correct them. Instead, think about how they could have come to that point of view. Remember that they haven’t lived your life and you haven’t lived theirs. Remember that those who can’t open their mind to allow different facts and opinions in have closed their mind to learning.

That’s not who you want to be, right?
