Learning to Celebrate Defeat - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites Podcast

Did you know it’s OK for things to go wrong? It’s true – it’s when things go wrong that we learn what we’re made of, how we learn to do things better, and how we learn to take care of others and ourselves.

We usually don’t like it much when things go wrong, and that’s a very human reaction. Before letting your anger or frustration or disappointment come out of your pores and out of your mouth, take a breath. Maybe take two or three.

Stop and consider why it feels wrong – is it because something happened in a different order than you expected? A different way? Or maybe it didn’t happen at all?

Understand the situation, then analyze what you’re discovering about the perceived failure. Much of the time, things just happened differently than you anticipated, yet they still turned out OK, and that teaches you flexibility. Sometimes the best-laid plans go awry and while it can still happen, the timetable has shifted, and that teaches you problem-solving. Sometimes someone drops a ball and it’s back to square one. That’s where you can hone your leadership skills.

See – there are benefits that come out of things going wrong!
