How to Not Fail at Caring - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites

I want to share a story about a time I failed three people at once.

I was at a concert, walking past a low wall. People were sitting on the lawn at the top of the wall and as I passed by, a woman fell from the lawn to the concrete walkway. The man I was with kept walking. I turned to help the woman and he grabbed me by the hand and insisted I keep walking, too. I tried to go back. He made that impossible.

I failed that woman, I failed my date, and I failed myself.

Have you ever had something like that happen in your life? It feels bad because we are caring people. We want to help others, and while I know that it was a short drop so she likely didn’t hurt herself badly, and also that there were plenty of others around to help her, walking past someone I could help isn’t who I am.

You, too?

If you’re ever in a position like this, and if I am ever again, here’s a plan: stop. Just stop. Stop moving, and make the person who’s trying to walk on by stop, too. Look them in the eye and remind them that the heart is for more than just moving blood around, turn around and go help.

My date could have learned something about the best quality of humanity instead of showing me the worst. Share your best qualities as often as you can – the world needs you.
