The Psychology of Streaks - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites

Do you play a game that counts your “streak?” And do you feel awful when you lose your streak?

I play Wordle and remember how I felt when I failed to solve the puzzle on day 99 of a streak. It’s bad enough to fail on the puzzle…it’s sooooo bad to fall short of the milestone of 100 days by one stinkin’ day.

As I licked my wounds I started to wonder why I cared? Why was I feeling extra-bad about not solving the puzzle…after all, it’s only a puzzle!

Maintaining a streak creates motivation and momentum…keeping the streak alive is more than just keeping to the habit of doing the daily puzzle, it’s the determination to move the needle in a positive direction every day. That determination feels good while maintaining the streak and can feel very bad when the streak dies. The euphoria of extending the streak turns into dejectedness over having to start at square one again.

If you like the motivation and momentum that streaks engender, great. Just try to keep it in perspective when a great streak falls by the wayside. New beginnings can be very empowering when you let them!
