How to Cope with a Bad Review - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites

In your work life, do you receive feedback from others? Now and then, does a piece of feedback sting? Yeah, me too.

I recently spoke at a large conference. The audience was given an easy way to share their thoughts, and 98% of them loved the experience. One audience member said she didn’t want to see me speak again. Ouch! I learned a long time ago to focus on the positive comments instead of obsessing over the ones that felt negative, and yet that initial moment still feels like a gut punch.

Maybe you’ve felt that too? How do you handle it when you get feedback that feels like rejection? What works for me, and what positive psychology practitioners also teach, is to reframe your knee-jerk response.

Most people’s initial response is to beat themselves up and wonder what’s wrong with them. Here’s the truth – nothing. Nothing is wrong with you, except that you’re beating yourself up over the opinion of one person. You may or may not know them, you may or may not ever even see them again, and yet there you are, putting their opinion ahead of yours.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and you don’t have to care about them. Now, dust off the gut punch and focus on all the good feedback instead!
