Do You Have Principles or Costumes? - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites Podcast
Have you ever known someone who seems a little bit squirrely to you, and maybe you can’t quite put your finger on why? Think about their words and actions – do they match?
I used to work for a man who talked a really good game, yet when push came to shove in this company, the game he played was quite different than the game he talked.
Chances are, when someone doesn’t “feel” quite right to you, their words and actions aren’t in sync. There are a lot of reasons why – it could be that they believed one thing and when they got more information, they changed their belief. It could also be because they have a need to please people, or a strong desire to not rock the boat.
Dr. Nitya Prakash, an Indian man of many talents, wrote, “If you are willing to abandon your principles for convenience or social acceptability, they’re not your principles. They’re your costume.”
When dealing with a squirrely person, remember that it could be a squirrel costume they’re wearing.
