Are You Killing Yourself with Comparison? - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites Podcast

  • “Comparison is the thief of joy.”
  • “Don’t compare your work in progress with someone else’s finished product.”
  • “When you compare yourself with others, you fall into a trap with no way out.”

Those three quotes about the hazards of comparing yourself with others are all commonly used and true. When was the last time you stopped to think about just how poisonous the comparison habit really is?

If you’re in the habit of seeing something good in someone and automatically thinking, “wow, I wish I was…” whatever, you’re in the habit of denigrating yourself for no good reason. What good can come of thoughts like that? None.

What bad comes from them? You’re tearing down your own sense of self-worth and self-confidence. This is a bad habit, and like any other habit you can stop doing it. Decide what your “interruption behavior” will be right now – a phrase like, “oh, there’s that old useless thought again!” is useful.

When you catch yourself comparing yourself, tell yourself lightly to stop it, and turn to a more productive, self-affirming use of your time and brain-power.
