Do You Manage a Hammer? - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites Podcast
Do you know, or maybe manage, someone who approaches most problems with the same attitude?
- Some people see a problem and immediately start looking to place blame.
- Some people see a problem and immediately start looking for a way to prove they had nothing to do with it.
- Some people see a problem and disappear so they don’t have to be part of the solution.
Have you ever heard the saying, “to a hammer, everything looks like a nail”? These people are hammers. Instead of reaching into their mental toolbox for the correct tool for the job, their default behavior is to use the hammer they’ve always used.
These people could use your help to grow.
When it’s just the two of you and they respond from their “hammer” point of view, ignore the words that just came out of their mouth. Think of how you would approach the issue at hand and share that out loud. Show them that sometimes a screwdriver or a wrench is the right tool for the job.
Lather, rinse, repeat and soon you’ll notice them bringing a few more tools to problems that arise.
