The Words You Use Matter...a Lot! - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites Podcast

Do you know someone who uses very dramatic language? For instance:

  • They don’t have a headache, they are in agony because their head is about to explode.
  • How about this: a person who got snippy with them is described as throwing a screaming fit right there in front of the entire office.
  • They don’t have difficult conversations, they have confrontations.
  • The weather isn’t hot, it’s sweltering and they’re going to suffer heat stroke if they don’t get into the air conditioning.

They can take the most mundane event and make it sound like the end of the world just through the words they use.

Dramatic language is used by people who are craving attention. They’re exhausting to be around, and worse yet, the drama is contagious. If you manage an overly dramatic person, they’re probably not going to change, and you can expect to find them in the middle of complicated situations often. Communicate calmly and clearly, and set boundaries aimed at limiting the damage the dramatic person can cause on your team.

Manage them gently, knowing you may have to manage them out the door.
