Why People Hate Happiness - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites Podcast

Are you a little tired of all the talk about happiness? It’s OK – you won’t hurt my feelings.

A lot of contrarian articles have been published about the pitfalls of putting a happy face sticker on everything, as if that’s what the goal is. The goal isn’t to pretend things are great when they’re not – the goal is to make things better by teaching your brain to focus and process differently.

I worked at a very successful radio station, we got a new program director who made a lot of changes, and suddenly instead of being first, we dropped in the ratings like a useless NASA satellite falling out of orbit. Turns out, the new program director was a good leader – he met with us, told us he’d screwed up, and told us how, together, we could turn it around and be even better than before. And he was right – we did even more than he dared us to do. In a crisis, he showed us that he didn’t break under pressure and we didn’t have to either. He gave us a target and the road map to hit it, focusing us on a happy, positive goal, and the celebration when we hit it was delicious.

Go ahead – dis happiness if you want to. The rest of us will be over here having fun and succeeding.
