Do you ever get white-hot mad about someone? You know the kind of mad I mean – that feeling of righteous indignation, of overwhelming anger over an injustice done to you?
Yeah – I’ve never felt that way either. Not!
It’s very human to react strongly to something that feels unjust, mean, and awful, and in our strong reactions, it feels to us like we’re doing something productive. It’s satisfying to our brains to take up arms against the indignity, crafting sharp words, practicing arguments we’ll win, and even trying to sway others to our side – you know, the right side.
Oops. What happened very likely had nothing to do with you, and wasn’t about you at all. Your reaction is what made it about you. And I’m not pointing fingers here – I have to remind myself of this, too.
The perpetrator was just being themselves, and you got caught up in it somehow. Your power – and mine, too! – lies in remembering that. The bad thing started inside another person and is because of and about the other person.
You give the other person power when you react strongly, and you deprive them when you ignore and go on with your life. Relax…take a breath…move on!
