Stop Piling On the Pain - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites Podcast
Have you ever been in this kind of conversation: someone talks about a painful event in their life, you listen, and in an attempt to relate to them, you talk about a similar painful event in your life? The conversation continues, and if there are multiple people, everyone adds their story to the pile of pain until you’re all marinating in a puddle of miserable memories.
Yes, the conversation allows you all to relate to each other, and yes, the conversation lowers the mood of every person in it, and you each end up with a body filled with stress hormones as your brains recreate the conditions that existed inside your body when the actual event happened.
YIKES!!
That’s not how you want to treat your body, right? The brain can’t help recreating past conditions when you focus on them, so give it good conditions to recreate.
Next time someone talks about a painful event in their life, can you talk about a similar event that had a better outcome? Can you focus on the good outcome instead of the painful event?
If you can shift the conversation to a more positive path, yay you! If you can’t – if the person or people around you are determined to wallow in past pain, remove yourself before your brain douses your body with stress hormones. Go find some fun – you’ll be healthier and happier when you do!
