Do You Say These Unhelpful Words? - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites Podcast
There are well-meaning people who tell others “You’re living the best time of your life right now.” They could be talking to a teenager, a college student, a newlywed, a new parent, someone whose child has gotten old enough to go to school, etc. etc. etc.
The well-meaning person is trying to be helpful, reminding someone to enjoy the life they have now, which is good advice and I wish they’d just say that.
When you tell someone that this is as good as it gets, in that moment they might be feeling that way, too. Or they might be feeling uncertain in their new role. They might be feeling like a failure. They might be feeling like they’re not fulfilling their potential. They might be wishing for a slower, simpler time.
When someone in that mental state hears that they’re living the best time of their life, it causes pain, not hope. If you know someone who uses this phrase, please share this Tiny Bite with them. If you are someone who uses this phrase, please stop.
Let each person decide what is the best time of their life – you can support them and love them. That’s how you help them, not harm them.
