The Power in the Impromptu - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites
Isn’t it nice when a friend texts you or calls you out of the blue, just to say “hi”? You popped into their head, and they took a minute – ok, in some cases, 45 – to let you know they were thinking about you.
How do you feel when that happens? Pretty good, right?
Research on social interactions and how they affect both the giver and the receiver shows several interesting findings:
- The person thinking of initiating contact can feel significant anxiety, often second-guessing themselves out of actually making contact
- Reaching out in the moment that the thought to do it occurs feels best to the person initiating contact
- No matter how long its been since last contact, the receiver feels good about the “thinking about you” check in
- Both people end up having their mood lifted after an impromptu check-in
So the next time you wonder if it’s been too long since you’ve talked, and the person may not welcome a call or text, or has forgotten who you are, or maybe got so disgusted with you that they’ve blocked your number, silence the demons and send the text or make the call.
You’ll both be delighted that you did!
