Oops! Nobody Saw That! - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites

Have you ever been walking down the street and tripped a little bit? After the momentary fear of falling, maybe you felt very self-conscious, and maybe you even blushed a little bit, wondering if anyone saw you trip.

Caring about what others think is a human trait. We’re social creatures and have an innate desire to fit in, which can lead to caring too much about what others think about us.

Using the stumble on the street as an example, most people would be a bit embarrassed, let it go, and get on with their day, not giving it another thought. Those who care too much about what others think often use an incident like that as a way to beat themselves up. The internal dialogue might sound like, “I’m so clumsy” and “everyone thinks I’m a klutz” and they revisit the trip-up repeatedly inside their head, feeling that fear and embarrassment over and over throughout the rest of the day.

If that sounds like you sometimes, try this: when you’re about to relive an embarrassing incident in your head, put up a mental stop sign and remind yourself that’s in the past and now is now, and now is all that matters. Then get on with your non-clumsy day!
