What is the Subconscious, Really? - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites
We think there are thoughts we’re not aware of driving our actions and that’s sort of right and sort of wrong. What we really have going on inside our noggins is the brain running patterns, and because we don’t have to think about them, it feels like unconscious thoughts to us.
The patterns our brains know how to run are varied and wonderful, and we started learning them the moment we were born. When babies are hungry, they cry and get fed. Their brains learn that crying produces food and voila – a pattern is created. As they grow, the adults in their life get the fun of channeling the crying into polite asking, and then into learning to wait until it’s time for food.
You run a “first thing in the morning” pattern, a driving pattern, a hanging the toilet paper pattern – so many patterns! When a pattern is interrupted – for instance, the toilet paper is hanging in your not-preferred direction – it’s likely that you feel irritated. That’s your brain reacting to a disruption in the task.
Today think about the things that happen in your daily life that you don’t give a lot of thought to – those are the times of your day that you’re giving over to habit instead of focusing and making conscious choices. And conscious choices are where growth and fun happen!
