Quit Proving Your Worthiness - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites
Do you work or live with someone who always seems to want to prove their worthiness? Here’s what that might sound like:
- “I’ve taken care of the slide deck so you don’t need to worry about it.”
- “Sure I’ll stay late again tonight.”
- “Do you think this dress makes my butt look big?”
While statements like these made occasionally are normal, if you live or work with – or maybe are – someone who says things like this a lot, it could be a sign of low self-esteem.
People who do far more than their share of the work, people who have no boundaries between work hours and personal time, and people who rely on the opinions of others more than their own are showing you that they feel the need to prove themselves to you or others because they don’t have a very high opinion of themselves.
You can help them – when they say something that indicates a lack of self-esteem, reflect what they said back to them in a more positive way:
- “Thank you for doing the slide deck – you do such a great job!”
- “Oh, no – that’s right, you’ve stayed late a lot. You’ve done more than your share – thank you and go home.”
- “That dress makes you look awesome!”
Show them they don’t have to prove themselves to you.
