Winning the Biology of Betrayal - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites

Did someone betray your trust? Was it today, or was it a long time ago? Chances are, the betrayals feel pretty much the same, no matter when they happened.

Betrayal hurts. We trusted, maybe even loved someone deeply, and it feels like they used that trust against us. They didn’t really…they just very clearly showed us who they are.

Why do old betrayals still hurt so much?

Because our brains can’t tell the difference between something that’s happening now and something that happened many years ago that we’re thinking about now. If it’s active inside our skull, then the brain cranks up the same neurological and biological atmosphere inside us, making us feel all the same feelings no matter when the actual event happened.

This is where forgiveness can play a huge role in your overall stress and in your mental state. True forgiveness has nothing to do with the person who betrayed you – it’s all about you choosing not to relive the event inside your head.

As a famous Disney princess sings, “Let it go, let it goooooo”. When you can let old grudges, hurts, and betrayals go, you’re setting yourself up for less stress and more wellbeing.
