Do you remember learning how to ride a bike? Swim in open water? Drive a car?

Pick one and try to conjure up how you felt as you were preparing to do it for the first time. If you’re remembering feelings of excitement, nervousness, and maybe even sweaty-palms, heart-palpitations fear, then welcome to the human race, because that how we all usually feel before we do something for the first time.

If it was something you now do regularly, can you feel compassion for the version of you that was nervous? And can you feel proud of that version of you for working through the trepidation and doing it anyway?

Whatever you do today had its own “first time.” You had never done it before, and now, today, you did, maybe for the 10,000th time. Now, is there something you’re preparing to do that you’ve never done before? How are you feeling about it? Make a decision that you’ll do it, then go ahead and do it so you can ease that tension inside you.

See? You’ve just accomplished something brand-new for you. You did it – yay, you!
