The Tyranny of Taking Something Personally - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites
Have you ever seen someone comment on a post as if they were personally, highly, insulted by it? And you read what insulted them and can’t figure out why they’re so upset?
Listen up and I’ll tell you why: They think it’s about them.
Seriously – even when the person who wrote the post couldn’t possibly know the offended person, the offended person feels justified in their righteous indignation because they feel personally attacked.
Maybe the person who put up the post tries to explain, which just releases more vitriol from the angry commenter.
Maybe others try to help the angry person understand.
You’ve seen this, right – there is literally nothing that can be said in that moment or in that thread at a later moment that will mollify the angry person.
Nothing.
They feel justified in their anger and they’ll defend their right to that anger seemingly to the death.
What should you do?
Nothing. No explanations, no arguments, no justifications – nothing. Let it just lie there. Keep scrolling.
It takes two people to argue, so if you wade in, know that you’ve just volunteered to be the second person in that argument. Stop your typing fingers and keep scrolling. The mental wellbeing you save will be your own.
