The Key to Creating Pleasure After a Loss - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites

As a child, did you ever have the experience of losing control of your balloon string and watching the balloon sail away from you?

I remember vividly the day an especially beautiful helium balloon got away from my little six-year-old hand and soared into the sky until it was too tiny to even see. As I cried, mom redirected my attention to something fun and a lot closer until the sting of losing the balloon was gone, just like the balloon.

As an adult, I discovered that the very same redirection can take the sting out of grown-up losses, too. While having a wonderful friend or family member around to help redirect your focus is great, you can do it for yourself, too.

Next time you’re feeling a loss and hurting from it, remind yourself that it’s ok to feel the hurt and not ok to live in that hurt place forever. Then find something you love to do and go do it. That’s the best form of adulting – taking care of your own hurting heart.
