The Secret Wrongness of Being Right - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites
Do you work with someone who is stubbornly, doggedly determined to do something, even when that “something” seems unnecessary or maybe even useless?
For example, say a vet hospital employee is doing inventory of the prescription drugs, is told to discard any out-of-date drugs without counting them, and counts them anyway. To you, that may seem to be a waste of time and effort, and to the employee it may seem like doing the job the “right” way.
Would you be surprised if I told you that both of you are right?
Each person’s decisions are greatly informed by the lessons they learned in childhood, so if you learned to follow instructions as they are given to you and the other person learned that if a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing “right” – with “right” in this case meaning completely – then you would both do the inventory differently, and you would both be doing it correctly. It doesn’t hurt to follow instructions as given – in other words, don’t count the pills in expired bottles – and it doesn’t hurt to count the pills in the expired bottles, either.
Instead of being irritated that someone does something differently than you would, maybe try to be happy that you’re not having to do it!
