Do People Have Power Over You? - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites Podcast
Is there someone you deal with a lot – maybe a co-worker, maybe a family member – who gets your goat? They make you crazy, and you find them hard to be around, yet you can’t completely avoid them? Maybe you even blame them at least a little bit for how you feel and act when you’re around them?
Uh-oh…that’s one step too far, and you might want to examine that blame-game you’re playing.
Yes, there are people who are difficult to be around, and that’s on them. Not everyone knows how to act, and not everyone cares about how you receive them.
When you say things like, “Suzi is so manipulative that I have to call her out when she does it” what you’re really saying is, “Oh poor me…that person is so powerful that they can even make me think thoughts and do behaviors against my own free will.”
Yep – when you blame another person for your behavior, you’re saying to the world that the other person is more powerful than you are. You have self-control – in that situation, you’re choosing not to use it. Own that, instead of owning your powerlessness. And when you realize that you’re not using your self-control, then you can find the strength inside yourself to use it.
