Dealing with People Who Drain You Dry - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites

Think of your energy as an old-fashioned wellspring, and of a few people in your life – you know who they are! – who dip their bucket in way too many times, draining you dry. They demand more than you can comfortably provide, neglecting the value of the precious water you generously offer.

Time to cap off that well, at least for those few who abuse your generous nature.

Your time is a precious resource – your energy is a precious resource – your heart is a precious resource, and just like water in a bucket, these few people are dipping into your resources far too often. If they flood your day with calls and texts, construct a simple response: "I'll be available later today."

Don’t elaborate – you don’t have to. And “be available later today” only if you can be. If not, then when they show up with their empty bucket, let them know that today isn’t their day and they can try again tomorrow. Maintain an air of detachment, applying this shield consistently whenever they invade your boundary.

At first, guilt may gnaw at your resolve, and you can bet they won’t be happy with you. Be consistent and remember – those who complain most about your boundaries are the very people that made you set them.
