Learning Leadership from Jimmy Buffett - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites
Are you a fan of Jimmy Buffett?
I am, and have been for about 4 decades. In the mountain of articles about him since his passing on Friday, one thing stands out - that man was an amazing leader. He had vision, he was resilient, he was coachable and teachable, he built a network, then leveraged the network to build an empire that landed him on the list of the world's billionaires.
Perhaps the best illustration of his leadership skills, though, was how long his band mates stayed with him: all the members of the Coral Reefer Band spent most of their adult life working with Jimmy Buffett. The one who was there longest was Michael Utley - 48 years of traveling and playing keyboards for flocks of Parrotheads.
In the waves of memes quoting Jimmy Buffett song lyrics, this quote from an interview has been missed, and I want to share it with you today:
āI have always looked at life as a voyage, mostly wonderful, sometimes frightening. In my family and friends, I have discovered treasure more valuable than gold.ā
If you want to lead a successful life, no matter how you define success, be like the King of the Parrotheads - find the value in friends and family, nurture it, and cherish it.
