Who's Really in Control of You? - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites
When someone says something and you instantly take offense, you have just given your power away to that person.
Wait – what?
Yep, whenever you react without thinking, you’ve demonstrated that the event or person who caused the reaction is more powerful than you. Let’s say you always get mad when you’re driving behind a van or truck. Why wouldn’t you be mad? After all, you can’t see through the vehicle in front of you, and you feel boxed in.
Does the driver of the other vehicle even know you’re angry? No.
Would they care, even if they did? No.
Why should they care? After all, they’ve chosen the vehicle they need to carry the things or people they need to carry. Their vehicle choice has nothing to do with you, and your anger has nothing to do with them.
Use your brain’s executive function – the ability to observe your reaction and change it – to choose a different way to feel and behave next time you get behind a van or truck, or whatever sets you off. Play with this technique, and see how powerful you feel, now that you’re the one in charge of you.
