Sailing Through a Sucky Experience - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites
There are a lot of ways to cope with a painful experience. Some people cry for days, some people lash out at anyone who tries to help, some people self-medicate with food or sex or drugs, and some people withdraw into themselves, waiting for the pain to subside.
What’s the right way to cope with a painful experience? Find a way to distract yourself until you regain your balance – take a walk, take a bath, take a pen and write out how you’re feeling. Get some exercise, go to a movie and lose yourself for a couple of hours, give yourself a pep talk in the mirror. Meditate, make a to-do list, make an appointment with a therapist.
The right way to cope with a painful experience is to do what helps you feel better, moment by moment, not what makes you feel worse. Crying for days keeps you stuck in the pain, plus it makes your face look funny. Lashing out at friends and family isolates you. Binging on food, sex, or drugs might feel good in the moment – later on you’ll kick yourself for your weakness.
Get up, get moving, get help – they’ll all help you get better.
