Why You Might be Feeling Anxious at Work - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites
You know I’m a nerd, right? I love to study emerging science where our bodies and brains are concerned. We’re so complex that researchers literally learn new things about us all the time.
One of the ongoing areas of study is fear contagion and how one person can pick up the fear of another so quickly and so intensely that they go into fight, flight, or freeze mode, matching the mode the other person exhibits.
This is a survival impulse so hard-wired into our brains that we don’t even realize what we’re doing until the perceived emergency has passed. How do we feel the fear of another person?
Turns out, we smell it at about the same time that we sense it in our gut. The other person emits pheromones which our noses sense, while at the same time receptors in our intestinal tract fire off what appear to be warnings to similar receptors in our brains.
Next time you feel fear or anxiety and aren’t really sure what you’re afraid of, look around – if you’re in the company of a fearful person, you could be picking up on their fear, not your own.
To ease that anxiety in yourself, remember what you’ve just learned, and maybe move away from that fearful person.
