One Powerful Response to Rudeness - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites
When someone challenges you, argues with you, or is rude to you, how do you respond? Do you instantly volley back? Do you take a moment to think about the best thing to say? Do you – can you – look at them in silence?
It’s true that a spoken reply is usually necessary, especially if it’s someone you deal with daily. Keeping the peace in a family, friendship, or work relationship is important, and it’s good to remember that keeping your personal dignity intact is important, too.
When someone is talking to you or treating you in a way that is disrespectful or rude, remember this – silence is a very powerful response. It can be tough to stand silent, and from the other person’s point of view, it makes you look tough.
Practice silence in the face of disrespect – it’s easier to begin with strangers, so when someone cuts you off in traffic, instead of getting angry and yelling at your windshield, get slightly stiff and completely silent. When someone makes a disparaging remark about your clothes or politics or other part of you that’s important to you, get slightly stiff and completely silent.
Practicing this with strangers allows you to be ready when you need the silent treatment with a family member, friend, or co-worker. Silence is a very powerful response, and will make the offender less likely to take you on again.
