What Does Doing Something New Feel Like to You? - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites
When you’re faced with doing something you’ve never done before, does it make you nervous? Anxious? Frightened? Or intrigued? Anticipatory? Excited?
It’s pretty common to dip into the less-happy emotions when trying something new, and it’s good to get your thoughts worked around to a more-happy state of mind before you actually begin.
Think back to when you were learning things as a child – everything was new, so more things felt like adventures. As you got older and had more people telling you to be cautious or careful or spouting all the scenarios that would end in some sort of failure for you, it became harder to find the adventure in new things.
It’s not impossible, though – next time you find yourself faced with doing something for the first time, turn off the grown-ups inside your head who are cautioning you. Try to find your 8-year-old self and let them take a look at what the two of you are about to do. Put the adventure back in learning new things and tell the grown-ups in your head to take a seat in the time-out chair!
