The Problem With Being Rigid - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites

Are you more open-minded or closed-minded? Most people are pretty open-minded…right up until they aren’t.

For instance, I’m live and let live about politics and religion and who people love, and don’t get me started on the people who think my dogs should have the same rights as humans have. That’s where I have to remind myself that everyone is entitled to their opinions.

That’s a good strategy for you, too, when you start to feel the big steel doors in your brain clang shut on your hot-button topic. The most satisfied people are the ones who are open-minded on every – or nearly – every topic. They don’t preach what they believe to others, trying to convince them how wrong they are. They don’t end friendships over a disagreement on a topic, and they don’t cut themselves off from learning more about a topic in order to understand it.

Before you start to defend your position, stop and remember – the other person believes they’re right, too. Is argumentative really how you want to show up in the world?
