Some of the worst advice given to teens who are trying to decide about a career path is to research what the global marketplace needs.

• Does the marketplace need salespeople? Then they need to focus on sales.
• Does the marketplace need accountants? Then they need to get a degree in accounting.
• Does it look like more lawyers will be needed in the next decade? Then they need to study law.

What about what they need?

Far better advice would be to ask them what makes their heart come alive. What piques their curiosity? What feels like the right path to them?

When someone is pursuing a career in something they truly love, they are 100% enthusiastic about the work they’re doing – so enthusiastic about it that it doesn’t feel like work. It makes them feel alive, and what the world really needs is more people living their passions.
