Can You Let Others be Wrong? - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites
When you’re in conversation with someone and they get something factually wrong, do you correct them? Here are three reasons you might not want to do that.
- You know how it feels when someone corrects you? Yeah – it feels like that to others, too.
- It’s not your job to make sure everyone is on the same page as you unless you are the other person’s supervisor. Even then, correct carefully – maybe something like, “hmmm…I’ve always thought it was (insert your version here). Would you mind looking that up for us so we’ll both know?”
- What if they’re right and you’re wrong?
A lot of what we believe is true is simply something we’ve thought often or for a long time. I’m always surprised when, at my experienced age, something I’ve believed for decades turns out not to be true. It could be that way with you, too.
Let other people be wrong, as long as it doesn't put people or animals in danger. You’ll feel better when you’re not trying to be the professor to the entire world.
