How to Be a Recovering Control Freak - Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites

Did you grow up concerned about your grades, anxious to be on the honor roll and dean’s list, turning in extra credit projects, and dreading having to miss school because you were sick?

Would you be surprised if I told you that’s the beginnings of a control freak?

OK, “freak” is pretty harsh, and please don’t take it as an insult because I’m talking about me, too.

  • If we studied hard enough, we would get good grades.
  • If we did extra credit and took AP classes, we’d ace the honor roll, dean’s list, and admission to the college of our choice.
  • If we never missed a class, we never felt behind in our studies.

As adults, that level of self-control can sometimes cause us to want to try to control the actions of others, too, and that’s when people might start applying “freak” and be right.

It takes a lot of self-control to let go of trying to control everything. Use the same self-control you learned as a child to learn to let go of trying to control things and people that aren’t yours to control. You’ll love how freeing letting go is!
