Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - From Self-Conscious to Self-Confident
Are you self-conscious when you have to speak to groups – large or small, in person or virtual? Between my career in major market radio and then as a professional speaker, I can tell you that practice does help ease that feeling of self-consciousness.
I can also tell you that the audience you’re speaking to wants to like you and wants you to succeed, so the self-consciousness isn’t about the audience – it’s about you.
It’s you, telling yourself you’re an imposter or you don’t know enough on the subject or you’re a terrible speaker or whatever you’re saying to yourself inside your head that’s causing the self-consciousness. The way our brains are wired, the more often you beat yourself up, the more your brain believes those negative things about you, so the more often it’s likely to dish them up to you.
It’s not what you say to others that matters most, it’s what you say to yourself.
Pay attention to the nervousness and self-consciousness as soon as it starts, and re-direct your thoughts. It’s not anxiety, it’s butterflies preparing to help your words fly. It’s not self-consciousness, it’s awareness of the value you’re about to share.
Re-direct, re-frame, and regale that group with your wit and wisdom!
