Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Being Doggedly Determined to Have a Great Team

Do you work in a team, or maybe manage a team? Have you ever thought about what constitutes a great team?

A great team is like a sled dog team…individual members all pulling together. The members may look similar and may have similar skill sets, and yet they’re still completely different individuals.

  • The ones closest to the sled need to be the physically strongest ones because they’ll be the ones feeling the bumps and turns of the sled the most.
  • The ones in the lead need to have confident personalities while also being responsive to the directions the musher gives them.
  • The ones right behind the lead dogs also need to be responsive to the musher’s directions while having a bit more muscle to help the team change direction to follow the trail.
  • The rest of the dogs on the team need to be strong, athletic, and delighted about running down the trail instead of chasing random wildlife.

Sure, they’re all furry and four-legged athletes, and yet they all have specialized talents and experiences that they bring to the job. And every dog on the team needs to be willing to work with its coworkers, or all of those other important attributes won’t matter.

Think about your team as a sled dog team – who is in which role, and how can you help the team pull together better?
