Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Be Careful What You Believe
Beliefs are interesting things. Most people hold beliefs that they don’t question – it’s 100%, non-negotiable truth. Here’s a common one: the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
Yeah…no.
That belief is patently, demonstrably untrue and yet most people will tell you it’s true and some will even argue for their long-held belief. Let’s not even get started on politics, guns, and religion – what you believe feels true and right to you, and the same goes for every other person.
Beliefs come into being organically inside your brain – when you’ve thought the same thought often enough, that thought becomes hard-wired in your head and it feels like a belief to you. When you hold fast to a belief no matter what others say or even what your own senses tell you, you are making yourself unavailable to learn anything new.
By the way, the sun is at the center of our solar system – it doesn’t rise or set, as Copernicus put forth nearly 500 years ago.
Beliefs are interesting things – now and then, examine yours and leave yourself open to the possibility of a different point of view.
