Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - When to Speak and When to Stay Quiet
Mom used to tell me, “Sandy, you don’t have to tell everything you know.”
Of course she was right and of course it took me a long time to truly understand the depth of that sentence. It’s not just about spilling the beans to your Great-Aunt Carla that Mom thinks she’s a bad cook, it’s about so much more than that.
Have you ever said something you felt you absolutely, positively had to say, only to discover that the other person took it wrong? Even worse, now you’re the bad guy because you tried to help? There are people who will never understand that you’re offering them help and they’ll accuse you of being condescending, pushy, and pompous.
Don’t bang your head up against that impossible brick wall.
Some people don’t want to be helped – they like their “victim” self-image and when you try to help them feel better, they feel like you’re attacking them, and they’ll attack you back.
You don’t have to tell everything you know – share your wisdom with receptive people and don’t bother with the rest.
