Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Is It Better to Be Loving or to Be Loved?
Is it better to be loving or loved? This isn’t a trick question, and the answer is “to be loving.”
The brain responds to your feelings of love the same way, whether you’re loving a flower, a new manicure, or your romantic partner. When the pheromones of another person come into play, that’s when love turns to lust, which isn’t what we’re talking about here.
Love in its simplest form is a deep appreciation for something or someone. When you’re feeling love, your brain is triggering the release of oxytocin, dopamine, and other neurotransmitters, producing all sorts of benefits to your body. The more you can feel love for a blue sky, the great shoes you’re wearing, and the car you’re driving, the more benefit your body gets from those feel-good chemicals your brain delivers because you’re feeling love.
Starting today, find one new thing to truly love and appreciate each day. Focus on the qualities about it that you love, and hold that feeling of love for at least a few minutes.
If you’re thinking, “but I want to BE loved” you’re in luck – when you’re appreciating the things around you, people pick up on that vibe and become more loving, too – and some of that love is bound to land on you. Win-win!
