Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Disliking Someone isn't a Team Sport

Is there someone you have to deal with that you don’t like very much? No matter how hard you’ve tried, you just can’t seem to connect with them, or they’re loud and obnoxious, or maybe their personal hygiene is off-putting?

It’s OK to not like someone, just as it’s OK for someone to not like you. You weren’t put on this earth to be liked by everyone, nor do you have to like everyone, though it’s best for your wellbeing if you can find something to appreciate about everyone in your life.

If there’s someone in your life that you have to deal with and you prefer not to spend too much time with, it’s OK to dislike them. Do it quietly, though – don’t recruit your friends and co-workers into disliking them with you. If you’re a team lead and you hear co-workers talking badly about someone on the team, remind them that teams work when everyone can find something to appreciate about each person on the team.

Focus on what you appreciate, and then focus on getting the job done. Take your focus away from the person you don’t like and watch your attitude improve.
