Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - Quit Derailing Your Own Future
Do you sometimes – maybe even more than “sometimes” – dwell on the past, what you wish hadn’t happened, how you wish you’d handled things differently, maybe even speculate about how your life would be different if your life didn’t include those past events? Most of us do, at some point in our lives, and yet it’s an exercise in futility at best and a pathway to stagnation and depression when taken to extremes.
That train of thought starts off as a derailment because there’s nothing you can do about past events. No amount of wishing, dreaming or scheming will change the fact that those things happened. They happened in your life and that’s that. You can choose to marinate in the aftermath or let it go and move on with your life.
When you marinate in past painful events, you’re stuck. When you let it go and choose to move on, your life is one of endless possibilities that you couldn’t see when you were looking backwards at your past. Don’t look back – you’re not going that way. How to let it go? Notice when you’re doing it, and go do something else instead.
