Wellbeing Wisdom Tiny Bites - The Science Behind Drifting Apart

Most of us have friends who once were very close and now aren’t nearly as important in our lives. Sometimes it’s physical distance that alters the relationship and more often it’s a distance of a completely different kind – emotional intelligence.

Harvard Business School Online calls emotional intelligence the ability to understand and manage your own emotions, as well as recognize and influence the emotions of those around you.

People gain emotional intelligence as they grow and mature, and they do it at differing rates. Just as some people learn language easier than others, and some learn advanced mathematics while others struggle to remember their times tables, some people gain emotional intelligence easily while others never do.

When you think of friends that are no longer close, it could well be because you’re at very different levels of emotional intelligence. Don’t beat yourself up over not wanting to be around them, just understand that you’re in different places in your life at an emotional intelligence level.

They’ll grow if they want to, and you’re setting a good example for them.
